About Us

Our vision:

A world in which people can see and understand the scale of good works, the millions of lives saved and improved by Zakat and other religious Donations.

Our first mission:

We aim to start creating our vision by collecting and promoting positive news stories about Muslim organizations saving and improving the lives of vulnerable people. We believe that Muslims do more good, per head of population, than any other group on earth. Once we have checked and are sure this is true, we aim to let the world know.

When we started and why our symbol is still the Scales of Justice

This initiative started in February 2015, the name was then Balanced News. The aim at that time was to provide a counterbalance to the TV and newspaper stories about the beheading of aid workers, journalists and others by the self styled Islamic state. See timeline at the end of this BBC article. The counterbalance we planned was to provide factual reports of lives saved and restored by the religious donations of good Muslims.

Richard Swift, although a non-Muslim, had for some years served as Programme Director for a primarily Muslim Humanitarian Charity. From this direct experience Richard was fairly sure that for every innocent person killed by people claiming to represent Islam, between one thousand and ten thousand innocent lives were saved by the Zakat and other religious donations of genuine and good Muslims.

Richard found that very few people, even the Muftis he spoke to, were aware of the sheer scale of lives saved and transformed by these donations. Richard’s motivation and that of his Mufti colleagues in 2015 was fairness and honesty, nothing has changed. The counterbalance is thankfully now less needed so the name has been changed to the more accurate Zakat.news

Our Aims

For every visitor to Zakat.news site to smile, feel good and feel proud. It is as simple as that.

Historical Note

Good morale is a game changer

Put another way, our main aim is: “To Raise The Spirits And The Morale Of Ordinary Muslims In Cities Around The World”. Why? Because “Good morale really is a game changer for good”. What better aim can we have?
