Over 700 homes in Kosova have been destroyed after heavy rain caused severe flooding in towns and cities across the country.

Residents of Mitrovica, Vushtrria, Peja, Skenderaj, Kline, Istog and Decan municipalities have all had their drinking water supplies reduced as flooding has caused impacted water treatment facilities. Skenderaj and Mitrovica are the 2 most affected municipalities and have declared a state of emergency.

The flooding of certain rivers also set off landslides and damaged vital agricultural land.

Nearly 400 houses in Skenderaj and 300 in Mitrovica have been reported as damaged, with over 80 families evacuated.

The initial estimated cost of repair and refurbishment of damaged houses, along with repairing affected livelihoods, is well over €1 million.

Islamic Relief Kosova, along with other humanitarian agencies and businesses, has been on the ground distributing essential items such as food, clean drinking water and hygiene items. On the first day of distribution (22 January) the team reached almost 250 households across both of the worst affected municipalities and the support to the most affected families is continuing reaching all affected families

The team will carry on distributing food and hygiene items with addition of clothes and blankets and will also provide blankets and clothes to help affected families during the harsh, cold weather.
