Philippines Relief Campaign

The current Emergency Relief Appeal aims to raise a cash amount of QAR 8,539,503 for the relief of people affected by Hurricane Washi in the Republic of the Philippines in cooperation with the Philippine Red Cross. This amount is expected to help ease the suffering of five thousand (5,000) families within six months. Reports are sent to the donors within three months after the end of operations.
An amount of $ 100,000 was allocated from the Qatar Red Crescent Disaster Response Emergency Fund to support the initial response of the Qatar Red Crescent teams in cooperation with the Philippine Red Cross.
Summary
Typhoon Washi (locally called Sendong) hit the southern Philippines on December 17, 2011, with heavy rains and strong winds causing massive flooding, landslides and severe damage in the northern Mindanao area. According to the National Board for Disaster Management and the National Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Council, the death toll of typhoon Washi was 1,080 as of December 23, in addition to 1979 injured, 1,079 missing persons. 442 persons remained alive thanks to rescue efforts. 9,433 houses were completely destroyed, while the number of houses partially damaged was 28,049. In reviewing the situation of the province of Surigao Del Sur in particular, which is located within the Caraga region, the total agricultural damage identified was equivalent to 1 billion Philippine Peso (estimated at 21 million Swiss francs or 22 million US dollars). Currently, 62 evacuation centers are working on housing 9,700 families (42,700 persons).
The Philippine Red Crescent Center has been monitoring the situation since the typhoon reached the Republic of the Philippines and has distributed disaster management bulletins to its affiliates, especially those within the typhoon areas. At the onset of the disaster, the Philippine Red Cross quickly deployed its emergency response units, as well as 143 volunteers in the Cagayan de Oro region and nearby.
In addition to the rescue operations, Cagayan de Oro, Dumaguete and Iligan offered hot meals for 2,300 people and food for 828 people. The Philippine Red Cross has also set up first aid and medical care places in evacuation centers to provide assistance to the affected families.
The current emergency distress call responds to the request of the Philippine Red Cross, and focuses on providing support to take the appropriate and urgent response to provide immediate assistance to affected individuals. The operation focuses on the provision of food and non-food items, potable water and shelter, as well as the provision of subsistence components to 5,000 family (25,000 persons) in the affected areas of northern Mindanao. The affected areas include Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.
Through the current contribution, 5,000 families will receive food items enough for one week, as well as essential non-food items, including blankets, sleeping mats and fuel tankers. Red Crescent teams will also carry out basic hygiene operations for families that receive non-food items in order to contribute to reducing the risk of water-related and water-borne diseases. In order to meet the immediate water needs of the individuals in the evacuation centers, Qatar Red Crescent aims to provide those centers in urgent need with clean water. Qatar Red Crescent will also set up mobile clinics in the affected areas, as well as assist in providing 5,000 homes with appropriate transition needs.
